A Nagar Panchayat (Municipal Council) is an Urban Local Body responsible for administering towns with a population of 100,000 or more. Under the system of urban local self-governance, a Nagar Panchayat functions as an administrative unit within the district in which it is located. It is entrusted with various duties and responsibilities as defined under the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992 and works in close coordination with the State Government.
The members of the Nagar Panchayat are elected representatives who serve a five-year term. The town is divided into different wards based on its population, and each ward elects its own representative. All elected members collectively elect a Chairperson to preside over meetings and oversee the functioning of the Municipal Council.
